Natural Therapies Kinesiology

Felicity Paroissien

BSc (Hons), TASK (Cert)

What is kinesiology?

Kinesiology is a natural health care system which uses gentle muscle testing to evaluate many functions of the body through a holistic approach.

Muscle testing does not assess strength and does not diagnose disease. It enables analysis of functional imbalances. Imbalances when not corrected accumulate and cause negative compensations.

Negative compensations lead to negative functional changes, and give rise to symptoms of discomfort, pain or even allergic reactions. If these warnings are ignored, disease can follow.

Kinesiology focuses on finding those imbalances and treating the person holistically.

Some examples on what Kinesiology can treat

• Accident trauma , Allergies , Arthritis , Asthma, Allergic responses
• Back ache, Breast pain and congestion
• Depression Digestive problems, Dyslexia, Depressive Tendencies
• Fatigue, Food sensitivities
• General Wellbeing
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Learning difficulties
• Muscular aches and pains
• Osteoporosis P.M.S.
• P.M.T., Phobias, Post-operative pain, Postural problems, Personal
• Development & Lifestyle enhancement
• Rheumatism, Respiratory issues Skin disorders
• Stress & Confusion, Sports Injuries
• Emotional issues Pain Nervous Disorders

Using lymphatic massage, nutrition, and contact points, kinesiology balances the whole person, which enhances health and well-being. Health wards off disease. Kinesiology is truly preventive.

The Treatment

The aim is to provide clients with the most up to date and researched treatment when treating holistically. 'Correction' is offered where possible rather than a temporary 'patch'.

A favourite type of problem to treat is one that a person has had for a long time, or one that keeps recurring. These are the most rewarding to watch being corrected and put the person on a path to balanced health.

Natural Therapies
 Pilates

 Beverley Nicholl

BSC

What is pilates?

Pilates is a total mind-body conditioning exercise programme based on creating a stable central core by activating the deeper abdominal muscles.   Clinical pilates, developed by physiotherapists, is a modification on traditional Pilates in keeping with scientific research findings.  Like your house, your body needs a strong foundation to support it.  In your body the foundation is made up of our core muscles.

Through this unique system of exercise, Clinical Pilates will strengthen these core stomach and back muscles to create a stable base, from which you will develop posture, strength, tone and a more confident body image.

Pilates and your back

As well as developing a leaner, more toned body, Pilates can be an excellent way to prevent the recurrence of your back and neck pain.  Research shows the need for the development of your stabilizing muscles to ensure you prevent your back injury from returning once it has been treated.

Weybridge Surrey Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

For a 2000-year old medicine, acupuncture has gained rapid popularity in the West in the last 30 years  -  and with good reason:  it is a safe, effective system of medicine for all ages which treats each patient as an individual (two patients coming to an acupuncturist with the same complaint may well not be treated identically.)

Although acupuncture has its roots in China, our method of acupuncture is also influenced by the Five Element-based systems practised in Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan.  Acupuncture addresses complaints on the levels of Body, Mind and Spirit and fully understands that a physical complaint may affect a person psychologically or emotionally;  by the same token, psychological and emotional imbalances can influence a person's physical well-being.

So, who might seek help from acupuncture treatment?   From children to the elderly acupuncture can help specific conditions such as arthritis, asthma, back problems, high blood pressure, digestive disorders, anxiety states, facial paralysis, menstrual problems, infertility, migraine, sciatica, skin conditions, and many more.  The Chinese philosophy from which acupuncture stems, believes that when our own vital energy  -  or Qi  -  flows smoothly in the channels (meridians) of our Body, Mind and Spirit, we are well.  However, any adverse effect on this free flow of Qi creates disharmony and we become unwell.  The insertion through the skin of fine, hair-like needles can influence our Qi and disperse any blockage, or build up any deficiencies so that a natural balance is re-established.  Oriental medicine has always stressed the importance of preventive measures and so acupuncture is also widely used as a general tonic and protective system throughout the year;  the ancient Chinese advised living by the rhythm and bounty of the seasons but in the hectic 21st century we may feel that we have moved away from the natural harmony of the year and acupuncture treatment, with its sensible, down-to-earth lifestyle advice, can bring us back to experiencing and appreciating the seasons.

A course of acupuncture treatment begins with a 2-hour session in which the practitioner takes a full case history (noting details of the patient's GP and any medication being prescribed);  a physical examination and blood pressure test are carried out and the first needling takes place.  Pulse-taking is a major part of all treatments (we have 12 Chinese pulses!) and examination of the tongue is also important in our diagnosis.  We would ask female patients not to wear make-up to the 1st treatment as colour is used in diagnosis.  Subsequent treatments last 1 hour.

The number of treatments required will depend on the constitution of the individual patient, the condition itself and length of time the patient has had the complaint.  We would generally advise a course of no less than 6 treatments as acupuncture has a cumulative effect.

What does acupuncture feel like?

The sensation felt when we connect with a patient's Qi can be described as a momentary tingling or dull ache.  Most patients have a feeling of calm and well-being following acupuncture treatment.

We are very happy to discuss treatment issues by telephone; or if you would like to meet us and discuss further please call the clinic on 01932 888663.

Natural Therapies Bowen Therapy

Claire Sandy
E.C.B.S.

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen is a totally holistic and extremely gentle, relaxing and non-invasive therapy that affects the body in ways which promote healing, pain relief and recovery of energy.
A Bowen treatment is unique in that it is gentle, subtle and relaxing and a few treatments at weekly intervals can often be sufficient to achieve lasting relief from even long standing pain.

Although the treatment encourages the body to realign itself, there is no manipulation or force applied.  The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers to make gentle rolling movements over muscles, ligaments and tendons at precise points to make the fine adjustments which will help to relieve tension, reduce pain and initiate the healing process.  Bowen is suitable for all ages including babies and very elderly.

How does it work?

Bowen moves send impulses to the brain to triggers the body’s own healing systems and rebalances the body’s energy. It is very common for a client to return for a second treatment and report that the original presenting problem is better and improvements have also been felt in other areas of the body, as equilibrium is restored.  Rests are given throughout the treatment, allowing the body and brain time to communicate and investigate to decide what actions are required in response to the moves made to restore balance to the body.

What does it treat?

Bowen can help a wide range of conditions -

• Musculo-skeletal Pain such as back pain, frozen shoulders & necks, sporting injuries, arthritic pain, headaches/migraines, fibromyalgia, whiplash
• Respiratory Problems including; asthma, bronchitis, hay fever
• Digestive Disorders; IBS, constipation, colic, Chrohn's disease, indigestion
• Gynaecological Conditions; infertility, mastitis, pre menstrual syndrome, breast lumps, menopausal symptoms
• Tension/Anxiety/Insomnia
• Other conditions include: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Tinnitus, bed wetting, prostatic problems, haemorrhoids, earache and ear infections, depression, Eczema/Skin problems, Carpal tunnel syndrome/RSI

Bowen technique helps the body remember how to adjust, adapt and heal itself.

Bowen equals Balance

Weybridge Surrey Shiatsu

Lior Levy

LicAc,BA,MBAcc

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu therapy was developed in Japan and it is a part of the Japanese medicine alongside acupuncture. The theory behind is based on twelve channels of energy, called meridians, which flow throughout our body. The energy that flows through these meridians is the core of our being and manifests in our body, mind and spirit as organs, thoughts and emotions.

When there is a perfect balance and harmony in the different energies, the body has the capacity to heal itself, however, due to stress, lifestyle and other reasons from every aspect of our lives, the harmony is disturbed and the energetic imbalance will influence our well being and manifest itself in our body, mind and spirit in different ways and common symptoms.

The treatment's aim is to restore harmony in the different energies using human touch. The treatment involves pressure, manipulation and stretches along the meridians, while the client is lying on a mattress fully clothed. That form of bodywork is very soft and gentle, since it is more energetic than physical.

Working with the body's energies, the shiatsu is more like a conversation, and by answering the deepest needs it helps the body to heal itself. Since we all have different needs and lifestyles, the treatment is personalized to the individual.

Treatment benefits:

Offer deep relaxation to the body mind and spirit

Improves a wide range of physical, mental and emotional conditions (digestive problems, insomnia, constipation, ibs, backache, depression, anxiety...)

Improves energy levels, immunity, and general well being.

Offers support to the individual during a change or a difficult ongoing situation in life.

Some benefits can be felt from the first session, while chronic conditions require a course of treatments. Shiatsu is a way of preventative medicine and leads to a better state of body mind spirit and quality of life.

Weybridge Surrey Reflexology

Jo Mead                    Mr Lior Levy                         Linda Smith

RCT                            LicAc,BA,MBAcc                  BSc (Hons)

                                                                                    IIHHT - VTCT Dip Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology which dates back to ancient Egypt, India and China, is the gentle pressure and massage of the feet, which possess thousands of nerve endings, corresponding to certain areas or organs of the body.  It works on the reflex points to stimulate bringing about balance and deep relaxation and allowing the body to heal itself naturally.

What has Reflexology been effective in helping?

Although reflexology does not diagnose or claim to cure it has been found to be effective in helping many conditions e.g:

• Stress-related conditions
• Migraine
• Back/neck pain
• Infertility
• Hormonal imbalances
• Sleep disorders
• Arthritis
• Digestive disorders e.g. IBS, constipation
• Asthma, respiratory complaints e.g. sinus problems
• MS (relieving symptoms)
• Improving blood circulation / chronic high blood pressure
• Strengthening the immune system and stimulating lymph drainage
• ME

Who can benefit from reflexology?

Reflexology is non-invasive, suitable for all ages and may bring relief for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.

Many people find it beneficial, after completing a course of reflexology for a specific condition, to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain well-being.

Reflexology is also popular for its ability to counteract stress by relaxing the mind and the body and many doctors and other health care professionals recognise it as a respected and effective therapy.

What to expect from a treatment?

On arrival you will be made comfortable in a reclining chair or on a couch. After a preliminary consultation to determine you present and past health and lifestyle, the Reflexologist will examine your feet and begin the treatment by applying gentle, but firm pressure to the reflex areas of your feet. The reflexes cover the whole foot and each one reflects a body organ, system or area. Some areas may be sensitive to touch (please let the therapist know at the time), but this is usually momentary and any discomfort will quickly pass. A professionally trained reflexologist will notice subtle changes in specific points, which may be congestion or crystal deposits under the skin. This does not necessarily indicate a problem, but merely an energy blockage or imbalance, which they will gently work on to disperse and bring balance back to the corresponding areas of the body.

The treatment usually lasts for one hour (slightly longer on initial visit due to preliminary consultation). A course of treatment may be recommended according to your body’s needs. This varies from person to person but may be an initial set of four to six weekly/fortnightly/monthly treatments may be enough to get the whole body back into balance. You then may wish to continue with less frequent maintenance treatments.

After Effects

The immediate effects felt at the end of the session may be:
• Deep relaxation
• A deep sense of well-being
• Increased energy
• Light-headedness
• A feeling of elation
• A really good night’s sleep
• An emotional release

NB: Sometimes after the first or second session people feel tearful, lethargic, headachy, nauseous or notice an increase in bowel movements or need to empty their bladder frequently for a day or two afterwards. These are all signs of the body trying to rid itself of toxins and in most cases they are short-lived and show that your body is responding to treatment. Please tell your reflexologist of any such effects at the beginning of your next treatment so that they can formulate a treatment plan unique to you.

Please enquire about fees for combination therapy of Reflexology and Herbal Medicine as these can be tailored to suit your individual needs.  Please contact the clinic for further information on 01932 888683.

Natural Therapies Sports Massage

 Jo Mead

RSCT/VTCT

What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a popular therapy that helps to alleviate stress and tension which can build up in the tissues during physical activity. By massaging the deeper layers of muscle tissue using a combination of techniques, the therapy can bring the client back to optimum performance.

Excellent for pre and post sporting events and also good for the non-sports person to keep the muscles free from excessive tension and relieve overworked muscles which occur in everyday activities.

Natural Therapies Indian Head Massage

 Linda Smith

What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage, ‘champi' meaning head massage, is a traditional treatment that has been practiced (and still is) for thousands of years. Narendra Mehta brought it to England in 1981 and extended it from the head and scalp to include the neck, shoulders, and face.

Various massage techniques are used (either with or without oils) to help release fibrous muscle knots which are often held in the major muscle groups of the neck and shoulders. The skull is also covered by a thin layer of muscle which tightens if we become tense leading to headaches and/or feelings of anxiety. Once tensions are eased the blood is able to circulate more freely bringing an increased supply of oxygen and nutrients to the brain, improved lymphatic flow helping the body to get rid of toxins and bringing more flexibility to the area.

Also as there are a number of energy centres in the head, neck and shoulders, the combination of rhythmic movements can help to balance the energy flow with beneficial effects on the whole body. Clients often comment on the calming effect it has on them as it releases endorphins (chemicals in the body) which crate a feeling of contentment and wellbeing.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE?

Mental benefits:
•                Releases anxiety and stress
•                Eases mental tiredness
•                Heightens alertness & concentration
•                Provides a sense of calmness & peace

Subtle benefits:
•                Balances chakra energy
•                Provides a general feeling of wellbeing

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A TREATMENT?

A short explanation and consultation on your first visit.

The massage will take place with you seated in a chair.

It is recommended that you wear a vest top with thin straps and bring something to tie your hair back to keep it off your neck and shoulders for the first part of the massage.

The massage can be done with or without oil—some clients like oils used on their neck and shoulders and face but not on their scalp, please let your therapist know your preference.

The massage uses both soothing and friction movements of thumbs, fingers and hands, squeezing, rolling and
plucking movements to stimulate nerve endings, increase circulation and relax muscles.

The treatment begins with the therapist placing their hands on your shoulders and asking you to take 3 deep breathes and to close your eyes. A shoulder and neck massage routine help to relax the trapezius muscle. Then the head will be worked on with the scalp being rubbed and tapped and the hair briskly tussled and gently pulled, and the ears gently tugged. Lastly acupressure points on the face are worked on. As the massage proceeds the client relaxes and breathes more deeply and can release negative energy. The treatment will end as it began with the therapist placing their hands on your shoulders asking you to take 3 deep breaths.
 Treatment usually lasts 30-45 mins

AFTER EFFECTS

The immediate effects felt at the end of the session may be:
• Deep relaxation
• A deep sense of well-being
• Increased energy
• Light-headedness
• A feeling of elation

e.g.
• frequent visits to the toilet
• runny nose and / or cough
• vivid dreams
• temporary flare-up of a suppressed condition before healing e.g. skin
• perspiration – since it is an alternative way that the body can excrete toxins.

These are all signs of the body trying to rid itself of toxins and in most cases they are short-lived and show that your body is responding to treatment.  Please tell your Therapist of any such effects at the beginning of your next treatment.
