Energy Healing has a history dating back many centuries and many claim that 'hands-on' energy healing methods are as old as mankind itself. The idea of energy, or life-force, flowing through the body affecting health and well-being spans many ancient cultures.

Universal life-energy is an integral part of Japanese and Chinese healing philosophy. Hinduism, New-Age and Tantra refer to Chakra energy points of the body. Ayurvedic medicine proposes energy balance of the mind, body and spirit within three processes known as doshas.

Modern Energy Healing focuses on the human energy field (known as the Aura) and incorporates various techniques such as chakra balancing, emotional clearing and psychic surgery.

Physical or emotional problems cause blockages in the human energy field disrupting the natural flow of energy around the body. Rather than treating the symptoms, Energy Healing treats the individual as a whole looking at the root causes of the problem often found deep within a person's psyche.

Energy Healing practitioners recognise the human energy field as having four dimensions: Physical, Aura, Intention and Essence. The Physical relates to mental and emotional disturbances that lead to tension, disease or disorder. The Aura comprises of seven chakras that make up a person's personality and ego. The Intention relates to a person's purpose in life and the Essence is a state of being.

Energy Healers use various techniques to identify blockages within the energy field and then help to release them. Common techniques include: chakra balancing, colour therapy, sound healing, relationship cords, emotional clearing, spine and organ clearing and psychic surgery.

Be prepared - It is advisable to choose an Energy Healing practitioner who is a member of, or is accredited by, an association or professional body. This ensures your Energy Healing session is carried out in a suitable environment and by someone who has received formal training and ongoing development. Members are also bound to a code of ethics and practice. The main Energy Healing organisations are listed at the foot of this article. On finding an Energy Healer, ask about their expertise and testimonials from previous clients.

Energy Healing is a holistic method of treatment comprising of different techniques and most practitioners will give advice about preparing for a particular session. You may be asked to think about what you hope to accomplish, not only with Energy Healing but in your life in general. You may want to consider what is preventing you from achieving your goals. Are there any physical, mental or emotional problems you hope to overcome? Do you have any spiritual questions you wish to ask?

Make some notes before you attend about your expectations and concerns. Preparation may begin a few days before and your Energy Healing practitioner will advise you about these and any other ideas before you attend.

Before your appointment, take a bath or shower. Energy Healing is a cleansing process of the body, mind and spirit and this begins with your own physical cleanliness. Start to focus on the goals for your first Energy Healing session, perhaps through meditation or taking time out from your day-to-day routine. Don't drink any alcohol. Avoid any activity that requires too much exertion and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Allow plenty of time to get to your appointment; hurrying will affect your physical and mental well-being and be detrimental to the effects of Energy Healing.

What to expect
Your first session will begin with a period of discussion about the issues you have and how best to address them with Energy Healing. Some practitioners use Extra Sensory Perception to help you uncover the root cause of your problem.

You can remain sitting during the therapy but certain techniques may require you to be lying down on a treatment couch. You'll be asked to remove items of jewellery (metallic objects can interfere with the human energy field) but you will not need to undress during your session.

The Energy Healer will begin to use a variety of hands-on techniques placing their hands gently on, or just above, areas of the body. This 'energy work' is done in phases and people can experience a physical and emotional release during this stage. The session also involves a period of guidance and reflection. Energy Healing can be used as part of your daily routine and your Energy Healer will give you instruction on energy exercises, nutritional advice or detoxification.

The Energy Healing experience differs from one person to the next but most would agree that Energy Healing is deeply relaxing and peaceful. You may experience physical or emotional changes after your Energy Healing session. However disruptive this may feel, it is a sign of energy beginning to flow freely around your body again. Give yourself time to rest, and drink plenty of water to flush out any toxins that have been released.

Energy Healing sessions generally last an hour but your first appointment may last longer as the Energy Healer discusses the therapy with you. The techniques your practitioner recommends can also add to your treatment time.

Practitioner's costs vary from town to town but expect sessions to cost £40-£60. Check with your local Energy Healer before making an appointment. Some Energy Healing practitioners are able to do home visits but be aware this may incur an additional cost. Distance Energy Healing is another option that may be available to you and can be carried out over the phone.

You may find that you feel the benefits of Energy Healing from your first treatment but expect to attend 4-6 sessions on a weekly basis to fully explore all the techniques available. If you have been suffering with a chronic problem over many months then expect the therapy to take longer to work.

Energy Healing is a safe, non-invasive and gentle therapy that can work alongside other alternative therapies as well as conventional medicine. Consult with your GP and local Energy Healer about any problems or concerns you have as they are trained to recognise what can and cannot be treated with Energy Healing.
