What is Existential Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy and counselling are concerned with human dilemas, human difficulties, human fears, human aspirations and many other human issues in life. As living beings we are all in the world and we cannot escape from existential issues as they are thrown up by the fact that we exist.

There are certain life events that can throw the most balanced person out of their depth.  People can find themselves overwhelmed with sadness, guilt, anxiety, anger, shame, frustration and fear, to cite just a few emotions.  Sometimes these emotions can leave people with no sense of meaning in their lives.  These are the moments when people come to therapy.

Existential therapy helps people to face their predicaments instead of avoiding the reality of life.  It helps people to face life in th eyes and engage with it.  This can be hard and fascinating at the same time.  Life can be hard and people are not equal to its challeneges.

The existential psychotherapist is sensitive to the uniqueness of each person and their capacity to respond to their life challenges by helping them to engage with life and its challenges with passion and finding the courage to face their difficulties and become stronger.  This is done with care, respect and gentleness.

Existential therapy facilitates people to get better at living by helping them to reflect upon, clarify and understand how they experience and respond to their life events.  How they perceive themselves and the world around them.

During the process of clarification, people might find new options for their way of living.  Existential therapy facilitates people to make their own choices in how to live and take responsibility for their own choices when they are confused and need to make sense of themselves and things again.
