Susan Davis profile

I have qualified as a Nutritional Therapist after studying at Patrick Holford’s well known Institute for Optimum Nutrition.  Prior to working as a Nutritional Therapist I worked as a chef in some of London’s top quality restaurants.

I follow a holistic approach to health.  I believe that various systems in the body work together and support each other.  For example it is not possible to have optimal digestive function if your liver is not working at full capacity.  This could be due to an over accumulation of toxins accuired over the years, be it environmental, toxic exposure, food related pesticides and herbicides, work toxic exposure and sometimes personal care products that are toxic to our health.

Nutritional therapy applies principles derived from current biochemical and physiological scientific knowledge for the purpose of promoting optimal health and wellbeing whilst recognising biochemical individuality. The nutritional therapist assesses a person’s nutritional needs to achieve normal physiological function. This means the maintenance of homeostasis, a position of wellbeing we all seek, but many fail to achieve. Assessment includes the use of appropriate tests and observations, such as case history,  physical signs, laboratory tests, and nutrition/lifestyle analysis to determine an educational nutrition programme. Assessment also provides the basis for referral to a licensed physician, or otherm healthcare professional if necessary. Recommended educational protocols may include, among other information, nutrition / lifestyle modification, nutritive supplementation, understanding of physiological / biochemical pathways, and evoking of regenerative processes. The use of food and lifestyle changes is recognised as a principle component of achieving and maintaining optimal levels of health. Research is increasingly recognising that foods have nutritive value beyond simply caloric or macronutrient quantity and quality. As a qualified nutritional therapist I  will work with you to achieve the best food selection for your personal needs. Our need for food is primal, but our relationship with it is complex and ever changing.

Because food is packed full of complex, biologically active molecules, the fact it has an impact on our health is no surprise.  Eating for both health and pleasure is, for some, not achievable at the same time. Striking a balance is sometimes very difficult, fraught with complications, and possibly confused by marketing messages from food manufacturers. As an experienced nutritional therapist, I will guide, encourage and support you through your journey towards optimal health and peak condition.

Severe deficiency of the vitamins and minerals required for life is relatively uncommon in developed nations, whilst modest deficiency is very common and is often either not recognised or not taken seriously. Increasing scientific evidence, however, may change this thinking. Particularly significant is recent research that suggests moderate selenium and vitamin K deficiencies may lead to accumulated damage over time as a result of vitamin and mineral loss, leading to age-related diseases. This research, just published in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Journal, demonstrates the need for public health initiatives aimed at identifying, treating and taking seriously modest vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Nutritional Therapy Process
At New Hopes Nutrition I recognize we are all unique and that no diet or health plan is suitable for all.  This may be due to biochemical differences, food preferences or lifestyle factors. I  aim to treat the underlying causes for illness rather than just the symptoms.

The process of the therapy includes a one to one consulation usually lasting an hour.  Prior to this each client is required to fill out a questionnaire.  The questionnaire is a comprehensive and covers various areas of health related information. This helps me to get an overall picture to what may be happening with your health and if any previous health implications may be playing part in your current health state.  Following the consultation each client will receive a comprehensive individualized health plan.

The major focus  of any health plan is usually centered on the persons individuality and it is designed to address their needs.  An individualized health plan includes dietary recommendations this may include dietary eliminations or introducing new foods, a nutritional supplements program and lifestyle modifications where indicated.

Some people may be suffering with depression but they also have IBS.  Again the way I approach a client as such is to address both systems, correct any nutritional deficiencies, provide an appropriate diet to address their individual needs and recommend strategies to help deal with factors that maybe contributing to ill health.

If as a parent you was to bring your autistic child to see me the first thing I would be asking you about your chid would be how is his/her digestion?  What are their stools like?  Consistency and how often does the child go?  Does he she have ongoing diarrhoea or constipation not resolved with heavy use of drugs?  What is the childs mood and behaviour like?

Does the child sleep? Does the she.he eat or does your child only limit the diet to a few foods? Does he/she pur pressure on it by leaning against the furniture?  If this sounds like your child I recommend you take action now and call for advice.  It is very common in autistic children and those on the spectrum to have digestive problems.  Once these issues are addressed quite often the childs mood and behaviour improves.  Autistic children share nutritional deficiencies such as fatty acids, zinc, magnesium, B vitamins, antioxidants and lack healthy gut flora or have pathogenic  bacterias dominating their gut causing disease.  They have problems with detoxification so they accumulate toxins and heavy metals that have an impact on how their bodily systems work.

Choosing a Practitioner
It is important to choose a qualified nutritional therapist who has undertaken all the necessary training to understand the theory and practice of nutritional therapy. You can check whether a nutritional therapist is registered with the Complementary& Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) by searching the register at www.cnhc.org.uk. By choosing nutritional therapists registered with the CNHC, you can be confident that they are properly trained, qualified and insured. Susan Davis is a nutritional therapist,  qualified from the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in 2009 after a period of 4 years of training. She is a member of the British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy (BANT), as well as being registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) and Certified by the Nutritional Therapy Council (NTC).
