Fiona Brewin Counselling Psychotherapy Altrincham
Are you feeling lost or stuck? Sick to death of continuously tripping yourself up by the same old thoughts and feelings that you just can’t stop?
These familiar self-destructive and unproductive ways of being can show as:
Depression, inappropriate anger, over-worrying and panic, fear of change, no confidence or motivation, relationship problems, addiction, stress, anxiety, phobias, self-harm, and eating disorders.
You may have experienced a trauma like bereavement, redundancy, separation, rape or violence and need help to overcome this and heal.
You may already be OK but still feel uncomfortable with certain relationships or situations and want to understand why you feel this discomfort? When we understand ourselves better and discover what makes us tick, we can develop better relationships and a richer experience of living.
As a Counsellor How Can I Help You? I can help you to gain insight and understanding into your behaviour by exploring the associated thoughts and feelings.
I can help you to let go of feelings and thoughts within a safe, confidential, non judgemental and accepting environment.
I can help by supporting you as you make new decisions and positive changes to create a better more effective way of living.
About Me… Your Counsellor I am in my mid 40’s and became interested in counselling and psychotherapy when I went through a difficult life experience. I found the therapy process not only to be comforting and supportive during this time, but unexpectedly to give me choices and insight about myself that led my friends to comment on the positive changes they saw in me and how I began to live my life. Therapy was not always easy and sometimes challenging, change is often uncomfortable, but the therapy process has shown me a better way of living and experience. Before I re-trained, I worked successfully in Marketing in the manufacturing sector for many years researching new products and then bringing them to market. I experienced all the difficulties of a fast paced, dead-line orientated career with the added demands of a partner and children. The stresses that this life put on me would show in various ways which I now understand trace back to ways in which I learned to cope when I was a child. It is this insight into why I feel, think, and behave in familiar ways when faced with certain situations that has led me to make changes and give myself choices.
How I work After we have had a short chat on the phone I agree an appointment time for us to meet in which you can talk more openly in a safe and comfortable place about what has brought you to therapy and what you want to change in your life.
Don’t worry if you are not too clear about this initially, talking about how you feel and think will often give you more clarity about what you want to achieve. During this session, if you feel comfortable, we will agree to a further 6 sessions, or if you are not sure, maybe you would like to have a look at a few other therapists before you decide. I am always happy to refer.
Generally sessions should feel intriguing, although they may be distressing, up and down and fraught with resistance. You will find yourself engaged in a curiosity about what you think, feel and behave like within your relationships, and how various aspects of your life appear to be connected in a way which was not clear to you before.
It is important for you to take an active role and be open to your reactions with me, both thoughts and feelings, as we explore. It is my job to help you learn this active role.Just like any relationship it takes time to build up trust and begin to feel safe enough to open up. These first sessions will go a long way towards this and will give you a good sense as to what a session feels like and how it is different from any other conversational experience.Counselling and psychotherapy promotes personal insight and change. It is unique to the individual. Insight occurs through the dialog we have together over time.As therapy is so personal to you it is hard to say at the outset how many sessions it will last for. One persons symptom, that may be understood and overcome with new decisions of thoughts, feelings and behaviours, may be another persons resistence which acts to cover up the real issues until challenged and faced in the context of the therapeutic relationship. You will know and feel insight as you begin to feel and think more clearly. You may feel lighter and more optimistic. People often feel more energised and motivated.
