Learn how to free yourself of problems relating to poor postural use. Hello, I'm Sally Rughani and I teach Alexander Technique in Nottingham. My practice is in Carlton and I draw cleints from all over Nottinghamshire including, West Bridgford, Colwick, Woodthorpe, Arnold and Radcliffe.
How can the Technique help me ?
The Alexander Technique addresses the fundamental causes of many medical conditions such as back pain, neck and shoulder tension, RSI, breathing disorders, stress related illnesses and general fatigue where poor body use and loss of poise are contributory factors.
With the Alexander Technique, you will learn how to move and hold yourself better throughout everyday activities. The skills performed in your work or leisure pursuits can be greatly improved: from sitting at a computer, giving presentations, through to digging the garden or playing a round of golf
How does it work ?
Essentially the Technique teaches you how to engage the natural support systems of the body so that you learn to sit, stand, walk and move more easily and effortlessly. The Technique helps to relieve muscular tension and fatigue by changing the poor postural habits that we have developed. Such postural habits might include hunching over tables and desks; slumping into chairs and over tensing the neck, arms and shoulders during keyboard work.
How can I learn ?
The Alexander Technique is taught through a series of weekly one-to-one lessons with a qualified teacher. During the lessons the teacher works gently with her hands to encourage new patterns of movement which, with words of instruction, help to release inappropriate tension and allow the body to become better aligned and balanced. The number of lessons you require depends on your particular needs and goals. The lessons last approximately 30-40 minutes and although no special clothing is required, trousers and loose fitting clothes are preferable.
About the teacher
Sally Rughani has been involved in the Technique for over twenty years, first taking lessons and then deciding to train as a teacher in 1991. She successfully qualified in 1994 after completing a three-year, full time training course, approved by STAT.
STAT (The Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique) was founded in the UK in order to ensure high standards of teacher training and practice. Sally, a graduate in Sports Science & Physical Education from Loughborough University, found the Technique a natural progression from her interest in movement, posture and stress management.
"I have been teaching the Technique for the past eleven years and I decided to train as a teacher after becoming convinced that the benefits of learning the Technique withstood the test of time.
For me the Alexander Technique transformed my posture from a tired slumping body into an effortless upright physique. I’d longed to sit without fatigue and envied the elegance & poise in those who could sit without slumping and collapsing. You would have expected a graduate of Sports Science and Physical Education to have good posture, but no one knew how to teach a basic co-ordinated use of the body that overcomes the common habit of collapsing and slumping the back.
Having Alexander lessons completed my education of the body and it taught me how to really use myself well and efficiently, the way it was truly designed to work. Since qualifying I have also taught many pupils to radically change the way they use their bodies. I feel very fortunate to be involved in this enjoyable work".
