ABOUT THE COLON
The colon, also known as the large intestine or bowel, is situated in the abdomen. It is approximately 5 feet long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter and forms the last part of the digestive tract. It is an extremely important organ as it carries out a number of vital functions including the completion of the digestive process, the absorption of water soluble nutrients and synthesising certain vitamins. The colon is a major part of the excretory system and is responsible for eliminating the by-products of digestion and other wastes produced by the body, as well as protecting us from infection and disease.
In a normally functioning colon, all this is achieved with the help of billions of friendly bacteria which inhabit the colon. The delicate balance of this internal ecosystem can very easily be disrupted by a number of factors including stress, pollution, poor food and drink choices, certain drugs, exposure to toxic substances and smoking.
The results of this imbalance can be seen as follows :
- The healthy transit time of food through our bodies is less than 24 hours. On average in the UK it is now 60 hours for men and 70 for women.
- The UK has the highest incidence of bowel cancer in the world with 20,000 new cases each year.
- One in three people consulting a GP have a bowel problem such as IBS, colitis, constipation, Crohn’s Disease, diverticulitis and yeast infections.
- A toxic colon is a major factor in the development of food intolerances leading to chronic ill health. You cannot expect to be well if the main organ responsible for eliminating waste is not functioning correctly. When the colon is abused by diet, stress, drugs, chemicals and other substances it tries to protect itself by producing more mucus. This additional mucus binds with the by-products of refined foods (such as white flour) and it builds up on the wall of the bowel causing narrowing of the passage. This layer of sticky, hardened faeces can weigh several pounds and is a favoured breeding ground for harmful bacteria.
- The colon is made up of pockets, called haustra, which become impacted and prevent the absorption of vitamins. Toxins are reabsorbed into the body, which can be the cause of health problems. This impaction also causes the colon muscles to become sluggish which slows down the flow of waste material.
WHY COLON HYDROTHERAPY ?
Ideally we should eliminate after every meal, two or three times a day. Most people consider themselves in good working order if they have one bowel movement a day and many more do not even achieve that amount with any regularity. Effectively, the colon is the sewage system of the body and it is susceptible to stagnation. Any waste material, especially that which has remained in the colon for some time, (i.e. impacted faeces, accumulated mucus, dead cellular tissue, parasites etc), can be the cause of several problems.
Firstly, this material is poisonous and these poisons can re-enter the bloodstream which makes us feel ill, tired and weak. Secondly, the impacted materials impair the colon’s ability to assimilate minerals and vitamins and finally a build-up of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular actions causing sluggish bowel movements and constipation. When this material is not expelled from the body, the decay is not limited to the colon; it spreads rapidly to others organs, causing auto intoxication or self-poisoning.
Toxic material is found throughout the body, particularly in the fat tissues, joints, arteries, muscles, liver etc. Colon hydrotherapy effectively eliminates large quantities of toxic waste, affecting the condition of the whole body.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM COLON HYDROTHERAPY ?
Essentially anyone with a condition either aggravated or caused totally or in part by auto toxicity.
Most diets include mucus forming foods like dairy, eggs, sugar, flour and tofu, and even those people on relatively good diets and who have regular bowel movements have old hardened accumulations of mucoid deposits which hinder proper elimination and need periodic cleansing.
Colon hydrotherapy is beneficial to people suffering from : constipation, diarrhoea, spastic colon, colitis, diverticulitis, liver sluggishness, halitosis, headaches, flatulence, haemorrhoids, skin problems such as acne, eczema and psoriasis, abdominal bloating, asthma, allergies, fatigue and many ‘psychological’ states such as anxiety, depression, and lethargy.
Some complex conditions such as Crohn’s Disease, myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and intestinal candida (yeast infections) are also helped by the detoxifying effect of colon hydrotherapy.
It is also beneficial prior to and following barium enemas and during therapeutic fasting. Of all of the organs in the body, the colon is the largest perpetrator of disease. It is said to be the initiator of 80% of all critical illnesses. Many people are permanently constipated and they know no differently. They take headaches, lethargy and general “unwellness” as part of normal life. They simply do not remember what it is like to have a healthy colon and a feeling of well being.
WHAT IS COLON HYDROTHERAPY ?
Colon hydrotherapy is a thorough, gentle and safe internal bath of the large intestine by a qualified therapist. It involves the introduction of warm filtered water though the rectum into the colon and it helps to cleanse the colon of poisons, gas, dry impacted faecal matter and old mucus deposits The action of the water together with special massage techniques progressively softens and expels faecal matter and compacted deposits. As the water exits the body through the evacuation tube it takes with it years of accumulated debris and mucus deposits. The therapist may also suggest beneficial dietary changes and may make herbal and supplementary recommendations to further enhance the treatment.
Colon hydrotherapy, or colonic irrigation, cannot be compared to an enema; it works in a different manner. Enemas only empty the last few inches of the colon, called the rectum. A colonic reaches the entire length of the colon and the process is painless and highly effective. The action of the water flowing in and out encourages the colon to function on its own. A course of treatments is recommended in order to thoroughly clean the bowel and afterwards a maintenance programme is normally suggested, the same as going to the dentist for a regular check up.
Many people think that colon irrigation is a nightmarish experience. In fact it is a very quick and efficient way to loosen impacted faeces and eliminate toxins. It also avoids many of the unpleasant symptoms of detoxification—headaches, nausea, aches and pains, fever, exhaustion, weepiness and even depression.
A professional colon hydrotherapist is skilled at putting you at your ease and minimising discomfort. Most people actually enjoy the colonic and are especially pleased with the unaccustomed sensation of feeling lighter, clean and clear afterward.
A colonic is a tool intended to be used to create a clean and healthy colon. A colon therapist who is dedicated to your health will encourage you to set a goal of having a well-functioning colon. Our fulfilment comes from assisting you in healing your colon, not in making you dependent upon colonics.
One good colonic is worth 20 or so regular bowel movements, so it may take some time for faecal material to build up in the colon once again, if one has a sluggish bowel. Once a series of colonics is completed the colon will begin to function like Mother Nature intended.
Colon hydrotherapy is used to accomplish the following :
- Cleanse the colon
- Exercise the colon muscles
- Reshape the colon
- Stimulate reflex points
WHAT IS INVOLVED ?
The first visit to a registered colon hydrotherapist will involve the taking of your medical case history and questions about your diet and lifestyle followed by an explanation of the procedure. This appointment takes a minimum of 90 minutes. Further colonic treatments take approx 50-60 minutes. You will be asked to go to the toilet to empty your bladder, put on a gown and lie on the couch. Your abdomen will be covered by a large towel so that your modesty is preserved at all times. A new disposable speculum is inserted into your rectum and is then attached to the silicone piping which allows water to flow into and out of the colon. Filtered water is allowed to enter the colon, the therapist assists the loosening of impacted wastes by massage and then the water and waste products leave the colon via an enclosed system which is piped directly into the drainage system.
At the end of the treatment, a herbal and/or probiotic implant may be used to soothe the colon and reintroduce good bacteria into the environment.
IS IT SAFE ?
YES. The equipment used here is all brand new and disposable. Thousands of colonics have been given safely. The pre-filtered water is introduced at a low gravitational pressure so there is no danger of bowel perforation.
Unlike the regular use of laxatives, colon hydrotherapy is not habit forming and in fact improves colon muscle tone.
IS IT MESSY ?
NO. There is no mess or odour as all of the waste is carried out of the body enclosed within a tube and this is piped directly into the drain. There is a clear part of the tube for the therapist to view the appearance of the waste and assess the condition of the colon.
DOES IT HURT ?
Again, no. The insertion of the speculum may feel a little strange, but it is very small and does not hurt. The main feeling during the procedure is the desire to “pass wind” , which may be uncomfortable, but it is not painful for most clients.
WHAT ARE THE RESULTS ?
The benefits of colon cleansing are many and after colon hydrotherapy most people report improved mental clarity, more energy, fewer headaches, less muscle and joint pains and they experience an improvement of circulatory, immune and weight problems. Mood swings, PMT and nervous anxiety can be alleviated when the bowel is cleaned. There is relief from bloating and constipation, painful haemorrhoids and skin problems. Cellulite and water retention disappear and the eyes regain a youthful clarity. With their toxic load diminished and their elimination improved, most people experience a feeling of “lightness” and well being.
Used since around 1500 BC, colonic hydrotherapy actually helps to re-tone the colon muscles and reshape the colon which can be misshapen and sag if filled with toxic wastes.
In the longer term, the risk of bowel disease decreases and as the nutrients are better absorbed and utilised there are all-round health improvements.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ?
Depending upon the condition being treated , the individual and the initial results, advice will be given at the first consultation. This may vary from only one treatment to a course spread out over a period of time. Deposits built up over a lifetime cannot be shifted in one or two irrigations only; it is unlikely that you will have a cleansed colon within a couple of weeks—it could take months. Following the course of treatment recommended, it is a good idea to have a further treatment approx every 6 months to maintain your inner cleanliness and good elimination.
How quickly you want to clean out your colon is your choice and together you and the therapist can devise a cleansing programme to suit you. Some people like the idea of a rapid cleanse and undertake a detox programme, while others prefer a more gradual process.
You will know when things are happening because your skin and eyes will look clearer, your digestion will improve, you will have more energy and old nagging aches and pains that have been around for years will disappear.
Drinking water is an essential part of the cleansing process and you should aim for a minimum of 6-8 glasses of clear water daily. A lot of people are afraid to consume too much water because they think they retain fluid, but many therapists believe that the body retains fluid when it does not get enough and so it tries to hang on to every drop available.
HOW MUCH DOES A COLONIC COST ?
The charge for the first consultation and treatment is £80 and takes approx 90 minutes. Subsequent single treatments are £60 and take approx 50-60 minutes.
The following discounted prices apply should a client wish to purchase a course of treatments following the initial consultation :
