MassageTwenty years ago I suffered from depression after a family bereavement. A friend came and gave me my first hand massage and I could not believe how powerful it was. I decided I wanted to help others realise the benefits of massage, which is a very ancient healing art.
Hippocrates, the ‘father of medicine’, said “The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day”. He also advised that you look to your diet, your exercise and your massage…..it was that important.
At present my oldest client is 95 years old and she was 91 before she decided to have a massage. She has had a massage every week for the last 4 years, excluding illnesses.
Massage is fantastic for relieving stress and stress related conditions.
9 years ago I went to Thailand to learn Thai Yoga Massage.
What to expect during a Massage treatmentI will take a full confidential consultation covering such things as you contact details, medical history and presenting conditions.
Massage is either with a carrier oil such as Grapeseed, and in aromatherapy essential oils are added to this. You will be left to undress, being covered with a towel, only the area being massaged to be uncovered at any one time. The oils are then applied to the skin.
Hopefully during the treatment you will feel warm and relaxed, giving up the cares of the day.
Bowen TechniqueThe Bowen technique has come to us from Australia where I believe some chiropractors learn it. It was developed by Tom Bowen who sadly died in 1982.
I came across the Bowen Technique when I pulled my back taking a massage couch to a client’s home. One session of Bowen sorted my back and again I felt the need to learn about this therapy which had such amazing results.
What to expect during a Bowen treatmentI will take a detailed consultation, to help get a picture of where you are at the moment with your condition. A Bowen treatment can be performed through light clothing, but I much prefer to work on the skin to watch for any areas of redness, however this is not a problem if you prefer to remain clothed. The Bowen moves are very gentle rolling moves over specific parts of the body, performed with fingers or thumbs on muscles, tendons, ligaments or fascia. We say the moves invite the body to relax. Some people fall asleep. After each set of moves I will actually leave the room, giving your body time to unwind without any interference from me. I will leave the room for about 2 minutes and then return to perform more moves. Consultation and treatment last approx 1 hour. You will be covered with a towel, only uncovering the area to be worked on.
Bowen works on the body’s parasympathetic nervous system which is that part of your nervous system that causes you to feel relaxed. A little bit like how you feel after a big meal.
Short-term (acute) injury can often be resolved in 1-3 treatments. Chronic conditions may require longer.
It may be of interest to anyone with Parkinson’s disease to know about a book called ‘Stop Parkin’ and Start Livin’. Written by John C. Coleman M.D., an Australian, who says he has recovered from severe Parkinson’s disease by having regular Bowen treatments, as well as other therapies, and by taking a homeopathic remedy.
Bear Grylls (the adventurer) and Bill Tarmey (Jack Duckworth from Coronation Street) both have regular Bowen treatments.
I love to spread the word about Complementary therapies and give talks on a regular basis to groups such as the W.I., T.W.G., church groups, Association groups, etc. Please contact me if you would like me to come and talk to your group.
