Marion Steel, MA, UKCP Reg., Psychotherapist and Counsellor
East Dulwich, South-East London and London Bridge, Greater London
I am a psychotherapist and counsellor based in East Dulwich and Peckham and London Bridge. I am UKCP accredited and my orientation is existential, however my original training was broad and I continue to incorporate other approaches in my practice. I have many years' experience working as a psychotherapist within the NHS in GP practices and within Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals in London. In addition, I offer supervision to other practitioners.
The Existential Approach
The existential approach seeks to be non-judgemental: the emphasis is on exploration, where the therapist/counsellor's role is to help you to open up the choices and possibilities in a particular situation and in your life in general, to clarify your values and priorities, and to achieve a greater understanding of what you want from your life and your relationship with others.
At times we are all confronted with life events which can trigger feelings of anxiety and disorientation, sadness, even despair. It might be the death of someone close to us, the breakdown of a relationship, the loss of a job, or a similarly significant situation, which causes us to temporarily lose our bearings, even our sense of our selves.
Alternatively, we may not be aware of why we are feeling anxious or sad: the feelings can seem to arrive from nowhere, they may present themselves to us in the form of panic attacks or even physical symptoms. Or we might, gradually, or suddenly, develop a realisation that our life no longer feels right, that we have lost our way, or feel a sense of boredom or futility with our existence.
The existential approach will seek to help you to address your concerns, and to re-assess what is important to you, in order to find a more meaningful way forward.
Conditions Treated
I have many years of experience providing psychotherapy/counselling to people who come with depression and/or anxiety, stress, OCD, bereavement and relationship problems. Sometimes people come to see me who are experiencing a lack of self-esteem or a loss of direction in their life, feelings of not being able to cope in life or at work, or difficulties relating to trauma in childhood and/or adulthood such as physical and sexual abuse and abandonment. Other times people come who wish to take stock of where they are in their life and in their relationships, and seek a greater self-understanding.
My Style
I see therapy first and foremost as a dialogue, as an opportunity for open exploration, offering the possibility through dialogue and questioning to open up new paths for creativity, new ways of seeing and thinking, which we can then carry through in our lives and relationships.
Some Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect from the first appointment?
I see the first appointment as a mutual assessment whereby we can begin to get to know each other, as well as consider together what brings you to therapy. You do not commit yourself to further sessions by attending this preliminary appointment.
How often and for how long do I need to come?
I usually see clients weekly, and will endeavour to set up with you at our first meeting a regular day and time. I generally see clients on an open-ended basis. I have extensive experience in both short and long term work. Some people wish to focus on a particular issue or difficulty and come for a few weeks or months. Others, who come with longstanding and deep-rooted difficulties, or who wish to engage in wide-ranging self-exploration may come for a number of years.I usually suggest to clients that we can review as we go along where we have got to, and at a point where it seems right to do so, we can then work towards ending.
Do you offer appointments in the evenings or at weekends?
I offer both daytime and evening appointments. I do offer Saturday morning appointments but these are limited.
Where are you located?
My private practice is 5 minutes' walk from both East Dulwich and Peckham Rye stations, with direct lines to London Bridge (10 minutes). I have a smaller private practice close to London Bridge Station.
