John Casson Life Coaching Northampton, Northamptonshire
About Me A qualified and experienced coach and stress counselor; having membership of the UK’s recognized bodies for coaching and stress management. My practice is based in Northampton, including Milton Keynes (an area of up to 25 miles radius).
What to Expect Initial discussion No charge for an initial discussion (30minutes) to assess needs/requirements. Typically 6 to 8 or 10 sessions to complete program; each session of 1 hour duration. In the first session, we discuss how we will work together, answer any general questions, and survey the client’s medical history for contra-indications to therapy/coaching
Following the first session more information is sent to the client. Client’s are given a Multimodal Life History Inventory (MLHI) questionnaire to complete, this forms the basis of their profile and subsequent program of stress interventions/coaching actions, as discussed with the therapist-coach.
Second session and onwards: the BASIC ID profile is made from the questionnaire responses; together the client and therapist-coach assess which modalities to address and a program of interventions/actions is made for the client to action. This is an important aspect, as the therapist-coach will not be taking the actions needed but the client will; therefore client agreement and understanding of the program is important.
Mid-way review; about half way through the program a review is made of how things are going, the profile is looked at again to see what changes in modalities have occurred.
Final sessions. Usually about session 6 to 8 the therapist-coach will begin to wrap up and conclude the process. By this time the issues will have been discussed and analysed; the client can then proceed to continue with the program of interventions-actions independently of the therapist-coach.
About my Therapies
Multimodal Coaching / Stress Management (BASIC ID) Originally devised by Arnold Lazarus, multimodal therapy-coaching is not so much concerned as to the why (underlying theories) but rather the how, i.e. if a technique is found to be helpful then it is applied.
Central to the multimodal approach is the concept of modes or modalities; these being the areas where stress or coaching performance/goal setting can be enhanced or may prove a problem to the client. The modalities are covered by the acronym BASIC ID, which stands for:-
B = Behaviour,
A = Affect (feelings) S = sensations (physical) I = Images (what comes into your mind) C = Cognitive (thoughts)
I = Interpersonal (relations with others) D = Drugs/Biochemical (medication, smoking, alcohol).
Coaching The main coaching method used is Stephen Palmer’s model, having seven steps, viz:-
1) Identifying the problem. What is the problem? 2) Selecting goals. Selecting specific, realistic, substantial and verifiable goals. 3) Exploring options. Writing down possible ways of reaching your goals. 4) Considering the consequences. Weighing up the pros and cons of the different options/solutions, 5) Taking decisions. Choosing the most feasible solution. 6) Agreeing actions. Developing a step by step action plan. 7) Evaluating the strategy. Focusing on achievement. Reviewing and revising the plan as necessary.
In common with the approach for stress counselling; a Multimodal questionnaire is completed, forming the basis for a profile (BASIC ID) and then a program of actions.
As an alternative the GROW model (Sir John Whitmore) may be followed; i.e. (Goals, Reality, Options, Wrap-Up/Will).
Solution focused A shorter form of therapy / coaching. Focusing on a single or two issues, the number of sessions being from a single session to two or three. As the title suggests, the focus is in getting to the solution(s).
More detailed articles on the multimodal approach, and building stress resilience, are given to clients for information prior to the commencing a program of sessions.

Testimonials Business /Executive Coaching “John spent time over a few months coaching me through a challenge in my work environment. John was extremely professional and knowledgeable working with me. Not only did he have an organized system and line of questioning but he is naturally insightful. He was able to suggest ways to help me visualize a solution and see aspects of my situation in a different light.
Rather than telling me what to do, John was along side of me and offered new avenues that empowered me to see real change in my situation. John is very professional with a natural and genuine manner. He was appropriate in manner and tone during all coaching sessions.” - MG. Interactive Art Director. Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
'Through his coaching John Casson has enabled me to develop my understanding of my professional development needs and plan how I could achieve these within a reasonable timescale. In particular, I have been able to identify appropriate resources and develop a network of new contacts and sources of advice.
John was a good listener and made sound suggestions, which I personally found both valuable and challenging! At all times he was professional and non-judgmental in his dealings with me. As a result I have now completed the first stage of my professional development plan, and successfully upgraded to Fellow of my professional Institute. Stage 2 of the plan includes a marketing plan to enable me to obtain my next professional role. I have every confidence that this also will be successful. BC. Human Resources Manager, Milton Keynes.
Personal Coaching: “I have been working part-time in the field of performance and entertainment for nearly ten years; including professional training, concerts and tours. Last year I made the life/career decision to pursue a full-time musical career. In my short time having known John he has been a source of great encouragement to me. Partaking in his unique teaching method and training program, over eight sessions; I now feel more equipped and prepared than I had before.
John focuses on key objectives, strengths and individual ability as opposed to weakness (although these also are covered in the course of coaching). I now have skills in the areas of: marketing, promotion, self-confidence, presentation, goal setting and task management; that before I hadn’t even considered. He has helped and encouraged ten fold, and as a human being, mentor and life/career coach is among the elite!” DM. Freelance Professional Musician. Northampton/London.
