About PilatesPilates conditions the body by targeting the deepest postural muscles, building your strength from the inside, aiming to rebalance your body and improve it's alignment.
It aims to improve your posture and improve the way you move. It works to strengthening the core muscles that stabilise your body and keep your spine supported. In Pilates we are strengthening all the muscles which comprise your ‘core' to improve core stability. Pilates teaches you awareness of your breath and of the alignment of your spine.
It is suitable for all levels of fitness and all age groups. I have had clients from 12 to late 70's.
It changes the way you use your body, and how you move when you are exercising and during everyday activities. Pilates exercises are done slowly with controlled movements and this approach it gives long-term results. Each person within a class works at their own level so they get the maximum benefit whilst still exercising safely.
A whole range of people do Pilates as part of their exercise programme, from elite athletes and sportsmen and women who are looking to improve their performance, to those individuals who may have back problems and have been advised by the medical profession to strengthen their core abdominal muscles by doing Pilates exercise.
And don't think pilates is just for women. Many high level sportmen include Pilates as part of their training, including the Olympic rowing team, rugby players and professional footballers.
