Alexander Technique
Practitioner: William Shephard - When a child picks up a toy, they will bend at the hips, knees and ankles; as adults we tend to fix these joints and bend from the waist. This puts enormous strain on our muscles and joints, whilst our sedentary lives lead to poor activation of postural muscles.
The teacher recognises proven pain-producing behaviour and facilitates coordination, functioning and mobility of joints and lengthening of the spine, thus reducing spasm and pain.
Chiropractic
Practitioner: Mark Tucker - Chiropractic is a regulated health profession in the UK, concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of both the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including bone or spinal manipulation or adjustments.
Osteopathy and Cranial Osteopathy
Practitioner: Helena Bridge - Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine which focuses on total body health by releasing tissue tension, thus restoring balance to the musculoskeletal framework. The Osteopath uses a combination of massage, stretching and joint manipulation techniques to relieve pain by relaxing muscles, improving circulation and calming nervous system function.
Cranial Osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that uses very gentle manipulative pressure to encourage the release of stresses throughout the body, including the head. It is can be helpful in treating a wide range of conditions in people of all ages, from birth to old age.
Podiatry / Chiropody
Practitioner: Kirsten Oddie - Chiropodists / Podiatrists are specialists in diagnosing and treating foot disorders and deformities.
The treatments we provide can range from simple toe nail cutting, to gait analysis (biomechanics), orthotics and sports injuries.
We provide foot health care to patients of all age groups and will accept referrals from GP’s and other health care professionals.
Physiotherapy
Practitioners: Tania Aleixo De Matos - Physiotherapists combine their knowledge, skills and approach to improve a broad range of physical problems associated with different ‘systems’ of the body.
In particular they treat neuromuscular (brain and nervous system), musculoskeletal (soft tissues, joints and bones), cardiovascular and respiratory systems (heart and lungs and associated physiology).
Pilates
Practitioner: Donna Silburn - The Joseph Pilates’ Method reshapes the body by strengthening key postural muscles, rebalances it by returning it to natural alignment.
It relieves stress and tension, improves posture and flexibility and gives relief from back pain and other musculoskeletal problems. Pilates avoids the muscle and ligament damage associated with other fitness regimes and consequently plays a key role in many injury rehabilitation programmes.
Tibetan Yoga
Practitioner: Delta Streete - This is a moving meditative yoga similar to Qi Gong or Tai Chi and shares elements of conventional forms of yoga. Developed out of a Trantric Yoga tradition these flowing dynamic postures are designed to promote your general fitness levels by increasing mental clarity, energy, physical flexibility, balance and strength whilst improving your ability to rest in sitting meditation. Tibetan Yoga is for anyone able to find a few minutes to practise regularly and is looking for a considered way to tackle the demands of urban living.
Ante-natal/Pregnancy Yoga
Delta Streete - Yoga is one of the best forms of exercise during pregnancy, a gentle, safe means of keeping toned and supple without strain, of keeping aches and pains at bay and energy flowing, of relaxing mind and body, and preparing for the physical demands of childbirth – and motherhood.
Mothers to be and in some classes, couples, get practical support to prepare for labour but most of all the emphasis is on preventive care and laying the best possible foundation in the transition to parenthood. Each birth is unique and at Birthlight Yoga Classes we strive to give special attention to each new mother, whether she is having her first baby or she is a busy mother already.
Abyanga Massage
Practitioner: Naomi Newlan - Abyanga is an oil massage derived from the Abyanga massage practised in Kerala, India. Traditionally this is practised with two pairs of hands and was intended as a subtle daily oil application.
This has been adapted by my teachers to be practised by one pair of hands and I will work deeper where necessary.
Note that this massage uses a lot of oil, some people like to shower straight afterwards so a spare set of clothes may be necessary.
Ayurvedic Yoga Massage
Practitioner: Naomi Newlan - Ayurvedic Yoga is a deep holistic and therapeutic treatment combining massage and assisted prescriptive yoga stretches.
Using oils and powder to aid suppleness and increase circulation, this treatment increases physical mobility and may include being walked on to aid muscle relaxation.
Assisted yoga stretches help to open the body and increase alignment. This massage is practised on a floor mattress and a minimum of an hour is needed. Note you will need to bring a pair of shorts with you for this massage.
Deep Tissue, Holistic and Therapeutic Massage
Practitioners: Naomi Newlan and Mark Webster - Deep Tissue Massage with sports technique focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibres of the muscles, tendons and fascia.
Holistic Massage is all about tailoring the perfect treatment for you. The therapist looks at the causes of your tension and works with the whole you to help restore your natural inner balance. - Massage in Clapham, Massage in Wandsworth
Hot Stone Massage
Practitioner: Mark Webster - Stone massage is a therapy that uses hot and cold stones. The therapist uses his hands to transfer the hot or cold from the stone to the client’s body. When the client is used to the temperature, the therapist use the stone to massage with. If the muscle needs more relaxing the therapist would leave a hot stone on the area for a deeper effect.
Indian Head
Practitioners: Naomi Newlan and Mark Webster - The aim of Indian head massage is to release the stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders. You sit fully clothed as the therapist uses message techniques and various movements including Acupressure and Reiki.
Pregnancy / Post-Natal
Practitioner: Naomi Newlan - Pregnancy massage is a gentle, holistic, relaxing treatment using oil to treat mother and baby in the last two trimesters. Special attention is paid to specific areas of tension.
Post Natal Massage is a holistic treatment to relax and heal the mother after birth. Attention is paid to the upper back if needed as this can be an area of great tension from carrying and feeding a new baby. This can help to enhance and strengthen the body, helping the mother gain her full strength and vital energy.
Reflexology
Practitioner: Delta Streete - Reflexology is a holistic therapy which activates the energy flow in the body and restores it to its natural equilibrium by massaging reflex areas in the feet.
By working these reflexes, it is possible to stimulate and encourage the healing process as each area is related to a different part of the body. It relieves congestion and toxins, aids circulation, relaxes muscles and encourages the body to rebalance and restore itself to good health.
Tui Na
Practitioners: Nick Johnson, Mark Webster - Tui Na (pronounced ‘twee-nah’) massage is a complete bodywork massage-based healing system, like acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
There is a recognised network of 12 paired meridians – one member of each pair on the right side of the body and the other on the left. There are also two unpaired meridians that encircle the trunk and the head in the mid-line.
Acupuncture
Practitioner: Nick Johnson - Acupuncture is the procedure of inserting and manipulating needles into various points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purposes.
Acupuncture is one of the oldest recorded forms of medicine, having been used in China for over 3,000 years!
Research has shown that acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce endorphins (which are natural pain relieving chemicals.) These assist the body to heal itself and gain pain relief. There is increasing scientific evidence to support the effects of acupuncture. -Acupuncture in Clapham
Health Kinesiology & Food Allergy Testing
Practitioners: Emma Finn - Health Kinesiology is a complementary therapy concerned with rebalancing the energy system of the body.
Health Kinesiology combines the basic principles of Kinesiology (which come from Traditional Chinese Medicine / Acupuncture and Applied Kinesiology / Touch For Health), with a solid, scientific understanding of the human electromagnetic energy system, psychology, and psychophysiology.
Nutritional Therapy
Practitioner: Alison Crane - Nutritional therapy is all about giving you the tools, plans and information to achieve the right diet for you.
Nutrition isn’t just about getting your five a day. Everything that comes in contact with your body, especially what you eat and drink, has an effect on its health.
Symptoms and disease are indications that the body is out of balance and the influence of the right foods and nutrients can help to restore the body to its natural balance through its own healing processes.
Reiki
Practitioners: Diana Powley and Luciana Buchanan - Reiki Tummo is an effective energy healing technique that improves our sense of well being by restoring balance to our mind, body, emotions and spirit. It does so by gently stimulating the flow of our subtle energies; by cleansing and recharging them, it activates our bodies own ability to self heal.
In doing so, it helps relieve stress and its effects, promoting instead feelings of peace and relaxation.
Hypnotherapy
Practitioner: Diana Powley - Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, very similar to day dreaming.
You experience waking hypnosis several times a day, for instance, when your attention is fixed on one thing, to the exclusion of all else, such as driving a car or reading a book.
During hypnosis, a trained practitioner can help you to access your unconscious mind, affect positive changes, control problems and achieve your goals - Hypnotherapy in Clapham
Counselling, Psychotherapy and EMDR
Practitioner: Christine Pearson - Therapy takes place within the relationship between you and your therapist, in a controlled framework, outside of the usual social conventions. Psychotherapists will not generally reveal personal details or opinions, nor attempt to provide direct solutions to your problems. Rather, they aim to provide a safe space for you to explore your concerns and gain clarity and insight into your thoughts, emotions and behaviour.
