What to expect
I offer the first counselling session free of charge. It is a chance for us to meet and for you to get some sense of what counselling is like. There is no obligation to continue after this session.
This is your time to explore issues which are concerning you; you decide what you would like to talk about. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ content; this is your space. It can sometimes feel uncomfortable exploring personal issues with someone you have met for the first time, so I will try and support you in this. My role is to listen, and to try and understand how it is for you, without judging you. I will check with you that I have understood you correctly. I will not tell you what to do, but through our joint exploration, this may become clear to you. Hearing yourself saying things out loud can be very powerful; it can be surprising to hear how you view yourself and your situation, and this can lead to greater insight. Talking with someone who understands can also help relieve painful feelings.
At the end of the counselling session we will talk about how you have found it and whether you would like to continue. Some people prefer to commit to a certain number of sessions, say six, others prefer to leave it open-ended and see how it goes.
