Areas of speciality As a Head of Year in a large Comprehensive School for the early part of my working life, I was confronted by the issues relating to abuse in all its manifestations. My work as a Psychotherapist and Counsellor has over 20 years been intensively involved in work with child trauma and its impact on adults. I provide training for the NHS and am generally regarded as a expert in this field of work.
Personality issues I enjoy working with those who find themselves repeating unhelpful patterns of relating to others and who want to think about change. Early trauma and the challenge of personality can bring us face to face with an awareness that we contribute in some way to our own unhappiness. The difficulty is in identifying the triggers or blind spots, often unconscious and out of reach. The role of therapy is to reflect the unconscious aspects of your relating to allow you to experience, witness and ultimately reconfigure your reality.
Eating Disorders Since my early twenties, I have been involved in working with groups and individuals who experience problems in relation to eating and food. Therapy can provide an opportunity to explore the emotional meaning of food for the individual, as a communication or symptom to be explored.
Reflective Space My experience in schools has led me to knowledge of the particular stresses on teachers, especially those in management, to deal with the diverse expectations of government, staff, governors, parents, pupils and family! I am interested in working with Head Teachers and those in management positions, to provide a personal space in which to explore the frustrations, challenges and personal limitations when relationships need serious attention and reflection. This could be a challenging staff member or a serious legal challenge. Reflective space provides time in a confidential and safe environment to find a way of managing anxiety, to find your personal centre and regain job satisfaction. Head Teachers and managers are human beings who need emotional holding to balance the hugely divergent demands on their time and emotions within the complexity of the dynamics they encounter.
About me I am 54 years old and have had a rich and varied work and social life. I began my career as an English teacher and went on to become a Head of Year in a large Comprehensive school. In order to work with individuals, I left teaching and joined the Probation Service when I began advanced counselling training. In 1990, I was appointed as a therapist in the NHS and my training took a different turn when I was successful in being accepted onto one of the most respected Psychotherapy trainings in England, The Guild of Psychotherapists in London. I have provided training within the NHS on a variety of issues but extensively on sexual abuse in childhood. I have also run therapeutic groups and offer supervision to Primary Care Counsellors, Psychotherapists and health Professionals as well as other private organisations.
My package and prices My sessions last for 50 minutes. The initial consultation is free to allow you the opportunity to meet with me and consider whether I could be someone you could work with. Sessions usually cost £45 and cancellations must be paid for.
What to expect The sessions will last 50 minutes and will not be quite like any other relationship you've encountered. In normal, social situations, we discuss each other's experience and interact; in therapy it is only the client's feelings, thoughts, fantasies, dreams and actions which will generally be considered. Initially this might feel difficult and awkward but often after 5 or 6 sessions this can begin to feel helpful as it allows the internal world of the client to be explored and understood more fully.
About therapy Psychotherapy is a process whereby two people meet to think about the internal process of the one seeking help. Therapy can feel confusing and frustrating at times but generally people find it a powerful means of learning about the self .Many people talk of a clearer view of themselves, of the past and their present worlds. The Therapist does not directly answer questions but the client often finds answers through the process of therapy. Therapy does not offer advice but works on the belief that once the client has increased understanding, the conflicts themselves will more easily resolve. Obviously this takes place within a strict code of confidentiality.
