Shocking new diabetes statistic revealed
Friday 9th January, 2009
Diabetes UK has published the latest statistics on the extent of diabetes in the UK and the results show the condition is growing rapidly.
The charity says that one person is being diagnosed with the condition every three minutes, the fastest it has ever been with a dramatic increase in type 2 diabetes diagnosis among ethnic minorities.
The figures rose from 100,000 people being diagnosed in 2007 to 150,000 in 2008. This equates to Type 2 diabetes diagnosis for 3% of the general population with 20% of that figure being South Asian communities and 17% Afro-Caribbean communities.
The charity has called on the government to make diabetes a priority for the coming year.
Diabetes requires support for those diagnosed with the condition as well introducing preventative measures in reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes – this includes information on changes to lifestyle, dietary changes, weight loss and physical exercise. Holistic health, alternative medicine and complementary therapy can help.
