Walking could help prevent cancer
Wednesday 1st September, 2010
Experts have called on people to walk more as a way to help prevent thousands of cancers.
The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has said that thousands of cases of bowel cancer and breast cancer could be prevented by a brisk walk
Dr Rachel Thompson, deputy head of science at the WCRF, said:
“There is now very strong evidence that being physically active is important for cancer prevention.
“You can reduce your cancer risk just by making small changes and this is highlighted by the fact that so many cancer cases could be prevented through something as simple as brisk walking.”
The government recommends 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week but figures suggest only 37 per cent of men and 25 per cent of women meet those requirements.
