Women considering abortion need more counselling
Thursday 1st October, 2009
Many women are unaware of the subsequent risks to later pregnancies if they have a termination and more counselling should be made available to help support their choices, according to a new review.
The risk of giving birth to a premature baby in subsequent pregnancies increases by 36% for women who aborted in their first or second trimester. The risk of a low birth weight baby increases by 35% if termination is in the same period.
Dr Prakesh Shah who authored the review said: ‘There is a strong need for women to be counselled about the risks of terminations before making an informed choice.’
