Daily probiotics may help liver damage from alcohol
Tuesday 30th December, 2008
You’ve probably seen the adverts for probiotic products and their benefits to health, well the latest research into these ‘good bacteria’ suggest they can also help repair damage to the liver from excess alcohol.
Signs of liver damage, even at an early stage, can be detected in the levels of liver enzymes in the blood. Higher levels suggest liver damage is present but according to researchers from Russia and the US, a daily dose of probiotics could be of benefit as they lower levels of the chemical that causes the problem.
The study involved heavy drinkers taking a dose of probiotics for five days. At the end of the study, levels of liver enzymes in the blood were reduced.
