Mental HealthRecent research has stated that those people with health problems can be helped back to the workplace with the right kind of support.

The large number of people on incapacity benefits and those on long-term sick leave could be reduced by up to 60% according to a report by the University of York which also highlighted that those with mental health problems who were able to talk about their condition found work colleagues to be positive and constructive.

Mental health problems are one of the common reasons for claiming incapacity benefit and the government has pledged to reduce numbers by one million over the next seven years. The University’s research unit discovered that employers want to know more about mental health issues and welcome more contact with GPs regarding employees with problems in order to prepare for their return to work.

“The research found that early intervention is critical in addressing mental health problems at work,” said Jane Aston of the Institute of Employment Studies which led the research with employers.

“Often, adjustments to the person’s role or workplace need only be minor and inexpensive.

“Line managers in any organisation have a vital role in recognising the signs of mental health problems and being confident enough to talk to staff about it.”
