In Chinese Five Element theory, there is a season related to each element. Late Summer is governed by the element of Earth. Nature at this time is rich and ripe, for students it is back to school and sometimes we get a glorious hot spell or ‘Indian Summer’.

It is a short season but it is a time of change in nature and within ourselves so it is very important to keep in contact with the earth so that we stay ‘grounded’ and not caught in the turmoil of change.

The Spleen and the Stomach are the organs connected with this element. The Stomach is the receiver of nourishment and takes the energy from food. The spleen is the transport system of the body and distributes this energy throughout the body.

A good herb for the stomach and spleen is camomile. Your emotions are closely related to our eating habits and effect digestion, utilization and appreciation of food. This is a time of harvest and there is a rich abundance of fruit and vegetables available. Do you experience harvest? Do things come to fruition for you?

The inward focus of Autumn and Winter

This season marks a shift from the outward expression of Spring and Summer to the inward focus of Autumn and Winter- so it is a good time to a daily practice of meditation, 30 minutes each morning and evening is recommended. Try starting with a shorter tome period of 15 minutes each day; try this for 21 days and I guarantee that you will notice a difference in how you are in the world.

Do you feel held and safe or scattered? Have you got what you need to last the winter or are you worried that you don’t have enough? Can you give and receive nourishment?

This is the time to balance your Earth element, the time for cleansing and making sure that you do some daily stretching exercises so that your joints stay loose and supple, forward bends, touching toes, side to side stretches are a good start. A major reduction in refined sugar, cow’s milk (and it’s by products) and alcohol will really change your energy levels.
