Stress enables us to react to situations and originally increased our ancestor’s chances of surviving. However, stress is only ever meant to be a temporary state and when prolonged it can damage the body’s systems and pose a threat to health. Prolonged and reoccurring stress can cause damage to brain cells and increase blood pressure and heart rate. Chronic Heart Disease was recently found to be one of the common causes of deaths related to stress.

Counselling for stress aims to change the perception of stress allowing you to cope with situations that were previously triggering your problem. Stress counselling helps you to evaluate threats and then provides you with resources to deal with them. Being able to control the environment around you is a major part in developing self-confidence which enables you to face the challenges ahead. Counsellors have to deal with stress on a personal and professional level. How a counsellor deals with stress will often define how they will approach a client’s problem with stress. When discussing stress and how it affects people, a counsellor will talk about the relationship between the causes of the stress, and the effects of the stress. This gives an overall picture of the stress-related problem. The causes of stress are known as ‘stimulus’ and the effects of stress are the ‘response’. Identifying the cause and effect of stress is key to stress-management.

A common misconception is that stress exists at a high level but this is not the case. Being under-stressed may be equally as common as being over-stressed and counselling will enable you to identify which state you are in. Either state can diminish health and have a negative effect on your environment. Personal and professional relationships suffer when there is too little or too much stimulus. Counselling can help you to be active in finding a balance of stress that will enhance your life.

Stress affects performance and has associated physical, mental and emotional states. Stress can make you feel alert, sharp and focussed on a task but it can also drain energy and make you perform badly. So, there is a relationship between the cause of stress and its effects. The right level of stress (from work, social situations, relationships) can release energy that motivates and focuses the mind and body. Too much stress, both chronic and short-term, can overburden the body’s systems leading to a drain on energy or an uncontrolled level of activity that causes emotional and psychological damage. Stress that is too little can lead to apathy and boredom as the blood flow decreases and energy levels drop. People require outlets for their mental energy and creativity so being in a constant state of boredom can lead to a stress-related problem and affect wellbeing. Counselling for stress-management helps you find the right balance of stress in your life.
