My phone rings. I pick it up. The voice on the other end says “I want to lose weight: can you help me?” Let’s cut to the owner of that voice sitting in my room. “Well, yes, I really DO want to lose weight but the thing is, I don’t think I ever will. You see, I can’t stick to any diet plan. I’ve tried them all, and I always give up. Then I feel so disheartened I end up eating everything in sight, and feel worse than ever because then I just feel so ashamed of myself. It’s a vicious circle. How can I break out of this? Can I break out of this?”

Another one says something like this: “I’m really fed up with my job. It’s boring, I don’t earn much and I’d like to be doing something more interesting. I’m tired of dreading Monday mornings. I keep looking at ads in the paper, but somehow I don’t think I’m really good enough to apply for any of them. Why would they want to employ me? Is there some way I can change the way I feel about myself?”

Or: “My relationship really isn’t working any more. I’m fed up with being the one who does all the chores; I do the shopping, I walk the dog, I seem to do everything. Why does it always have to be me who carries all the weight? But I can’t say anything because if I do we end up having a row, and then I end up giving in, and my partner makes me feel it’s all my fault. So I just get on with it silently, but I really resent it and I don’t know what to do.”

Does any of that feel familiar to you, in essence, even though your story is probably different? The above are examples of the unhelpful messages our minds have picked up, and which have become a part of our belief system leading to low self worth and low self esteem. The unconscious or subconscious mind has absorbed these negative messages, and then functions out of this belief system that it has created. It tells us we are ‘not good enough’, ‘can’t possibly do that’, and so on. Somewhere inside we may be saying ‘if I don’t even attempt this, then I also won’t fail. It’s safer to stay stuck and do nothing.’ This is exactly the kind of information that needs to be released, needs to be replaced. And it can be! Hypnosis can free the unconscious mind from the unhelpful baggage it has collected, and allow it to see possibilities that were hidden from it before. Suddenly the horizon is wider, the world is brighter and friendlier, the outlook is sunnier again. There is no need to go through life carrying these self-limiting beliefs!
