Who Uses Alternative Medicine?

It might sound like a strange question to ask but a lot of people do wonder if there is a certain type of person that will use alternative medicine. Alternative medicine is not just about being spiritual or psychic and has in fact grown to be one of the most popular and effective ways of preventing and treating illness, injury or disease.

You may be surprised to know that many disciplines used by your local primary healthcare trust were once considered alternative but have since become part of a successful conventional treatment plan. Homeopathy has been used in the NHS since it began and osteopathy and chiropractic are now seen as traditional therapies after gaining professional validation.

Alternative medicine is popular with all ages

The variety of alternative medicine therapies available means there is something for everyone regardless of age or sex. The treatment environment and the techniques employed by an alternative medicine practitioner can be of particular benefit to children for instance. Some children who require psychological assessment may find the psychotherapy environment intimidating but will enjoy art therapy because of the creative process involved or NLP because of the fun ‘tapping’ methods.

Recent reports suggest alternative medicine is most popular among middle-aged people and this may be down to a generation counterculture. The baby boomer generation are believed to be more likely to question authority and this is reflected with medicine too. By questioning the results of conventional medicine there is a shift in focus for this sector of society toward alternative medicine methods. Indeed there is dissatisfaction for all ages with conventional medicine pushing people toward alternative. A lack of effective treatment, poor patient-doctor communication, waiting times and a lack of positive thoughts about the future are just a few reasons for the switch to alternative medicine.

But apart from the interest to certain people and the negativity about conventional medicine, the biggest impact alternative medicine has had can be found in the reaction to its benefits. When questioned about alternative medicine a high percentage of people answered that it’s the effectiveness of the therapies that is the most beneficial aspect compared to conventional treatment. People have said they gain relief from their symptoms with decreased pain and discomfort when using alternative therapies over traditional treatment. Another positive response to alternative medicine is its approach to treatment holistically, meaning the body and mind is important to health and there is a focus on prevention, not just cure.

Alternative medicine is available to everyone

Alternative medicine has been treating millions of people worldwide for thousands of years and 1 in 5 people in the UK are reported to now use it. Even if a condition can’t be directly treated with alternative medicine there is a complementary therapy to help alleviate the symptoms of conventional pharmacological relief. Half of all GP surgeries now offer some form of alternative and complementary medicine but it is in private practice that people are finding the best service. Availability of treatment, a quality environment and highly trained practitioners are just a few of the positive aspects of private alternative medicine sessions.

Conventional medicine is moving toward the elements of alternative medicine that people find most attractive (holistic approach and patient-centred treatment). However, with budgetary restrictions on the NHS and an increased demand placing a strain on services the best possible choice for alternative medicine, no matter what your age, is through a private practitioner.
