Train To Be A Hypnotherapist
Training for hypnotherapy
With high mortgage repayments, fuel prices soaring and the 10p rate of tax starting to take chunks out of our pay packets, we may be stretched to the financial limit. Many people are taking up a second income by training in hypnotherapy while some people are choosing hypnotherapy as a new career. Whatever your choice, you’ll need hypnotherapy training before you can begin practising as a hypnotherapist. The courses available can be confusing so here are a few factors to consider ensuring you get the right training to use hypnosis as a therapy.
If you are considering hypnotherapy as a career or second job, it is important that you undergo thorough training on a course that is accredited by a professional body. There are a number of associations in the UK that help to self-regulate hypnotherapy including the British Hypnotherapy Association, The Hypnotherapy Association and The National Council for Hypnotherapy. Each association sets minimum standards for hypnosis training before hypnotherapists can become members. They will also have a code of ethics to work within and maintain a national register.
How do I pick a hypnotherapy training school?
Each professional hypnotherapy association will offer a list of approved training schools that offer a hypnotherapy course leading to a qualification. One question you’ll be asking is ‘how do I pick a hypnotherapy training school?’ First decide if the course on offer gives you the skills to practise hypnotherapy. Some courses offer lots of theoretical study with little practical work so go with a school that ensures you’ll be equipped to practice. The course should have sufficient tutor support during training and outside of training as well as after completion. As a guide, your hypnotherapy school should have a minimum of two tutors who have proper training, qualifications and experience as hypnotherapists. Ideally, the tutors should be practising hypnotherapists so they are aware of current hypnotherapy applications.
Your hypnotherapy course should train you to practice and have sufficient demonstrations of the techniques involved with hypnosis and allow you to try them. This builds your confidence to work with real people when you qualify. There should be a minimum number of hours of practise (typically around 120 hours) and study (around 400 – 450 hours). The course should study business management to give you the necessary skills to manage your hypnotherapy practice as well as teaching you its professional body’s code of ethics. The hypnotherapy course ideally should also give you membership to that professional body.
Ask the school if you can see the course syllabus to make sure it covers everything you’ll need to start practising hypnotherapy as soon as you qualify. The syllabus will also highlight the type of training subjects covered for hypnotherapy such as relationship difficulties, behaviour patterns, emotional problems, neuroses and psychodynamics. The course tutor will be able to explain these subjects to you and what techniques you’ll learn for treatment.
Hypnotherapy regulation and course validation
The hypnotherapy school and course you choose should adhere to the National Occupational Standards as hypnotherapy is currently not state regulated. Ask that the school can demonstrate this. Some hypnotherapy schools are attached to a professional body and accredit their own courses. Choose a school that not only has a hypnosis training course accredited by a professional body but also an external validation by one of the national awarding bodies in qualification and curriculum (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales each have their own authority).
