Pregnancy Massage An Overview

How A Pregnancy Massage Can Help

A fully qualified pregnancy massage practitioner will be able to give a massage that can help the mother to be with all of the stress & pain which can develop during the pregnancy. The growth of the baby can lead to a shift of the mother’s weight distribution. This shift in weight alters the body’s centre of gravity which knocks on to a change in posture which may create joint and muscle pains.

A pregnancy massage can help with relaxation and calming the nervous system which the foetus can also cause pick up on and benefit from. Others benefits are helping with back pain, muscle cramps, swelling and insomnia due to the discomfort being encountered by the mother.

It is thought that regular specialist massage treatments during massage pregnancy can help with the mother's return to fitness & mobility whilst also helping reduce the labour time. General feedback from clients of a pregnancy massage is that they say the treatment has left them feeling more comfortable, relaxed and with a more positive body image and self confidence.

What To Expect During A Pregnancy Massage

A number of massage techniques can be employed by the practitioner during treatment on the mother with her either in seated position, lying on her side or on a special treatment table which allows her to lie on her front.

However once a pregnancy is advance into the 2nd trimester the client is usually not treated on her back as this can cause pressure on blood vessels and lead to dizziness or even fainting.

Important
It is important to ensure the practitioner is accredited and trained for providing a pregnancy massage and extra care must be taken especially during the first trimester. Make sure you ask about their training and who their governing body is so that you are able to check on the practitioner register should you wish. If unsure always consult your GP first.
